This black and white ceramic bowl is hand-painted and glazed by Rezgar Mamandi at Manna Pottery, and it is the only one of its kind. Its outside is covered in fine black-and-white linework with turquoise and cobalt accents, and the inside is a glossy, bold red. At 9.5″ wide and 4.5″ tall, it is sized for serving salads, fruit or bread.
Around the outside, leaping horned animals run in white panels outlined in red, set between turquoise arches that frame the rim and the base. Behind them, hundreds of small hand-drawn white lines on black create a mosaic-like surface that changes as you turn the bowl. The design looks back to the oldest stories people ever painted: animal figures and simple geometric shapes on cave walls. Because every line is painted by hand, small variations in spacing and color are part of the piece, not flaws.
