Why a handprint keepsake
A photo shows you how they looked. A handprint shows you how small they actually were — the exact size of a hand that, in a year, will already be too big to remember.
That’s what makes this different from a picture on your phone. A hand or footprint pressed into clay, hand-glazed and kiln-fired right here at our studio in Sterling, VA, becomes something you can actually hold — a piece that sits on a shelf or a mantle, not buried in a camera roll.
It’s one of the most requested keepsakes we make, and one of the most common gifts parents give to grandparents — because nothing says “this is who they were at this age” quite like the actual shape of their hand.
How we make it
We use a soft, non-toxic clay that’s completely safe for even the smallest hands — no chemicals, no irritation, and it wipes off easily if it touches skin or clothes. Once we have a clean impression, the piece is left to dry, hand-glazed in the color you choose, and fired in our kiln at a temperature that makes it permanent.
That’s the difference between what we make and a mold kit from a craft store: this is real, fired ceramic — the same process used for any fine pottery piece — not a soft casting that can chip, crack, or fade over the years.
