This black and white ceramic soup bowl was hand-painted and glazed by Rezgar Mamandi at Manna Pottery in Sterling, Virginia. Bands of geometric shapes and stag figures in red-outlined arches wrap the outside, and a glossy red glaze fills the inside. At 6 inches (15 cm) wide, it holds 20 oz, enough for soup, ice cream or popcorn. It is one of a kind.
The painting is inspired by the oldest wall art. Rows of arrows, crosshatched squares and zigzag lines run around the bowl in black on white, and stag figures stand inside red-outlined arches. The artist says: “We started painting when we were living in the caves. We decorated all walls with geometric shapes. Animal figures were the first figures we ever painted.” Because every figure is painted by hand, small variations are part of the piece, not flaws.
