This black and white ceramic bowl was hand-painted and glazed by Rezgar Mamandi at Manna Pottery in Sterling, Virginia. Its glossy red glaze inside makes a bold contrast with the black-and-white painted bands outside. At 6 inches (15 cm) wide, it is the right size for breakfast cereal or a scoop of ice cream.
Narrow bands run around the bowl, each painted freehand in black on white. Rows of arrows alternate with squares filled with crosshatching. Zigzag and wave lines sit between them. Near the base, a ring of red triangles with spiral shapes adds a touch of red under the black and white. Because every line is painted by hand, small variations are part of the piece, not flaws.
